If you're dreaming of family photos surrounded by towering granite cliffs, beautiful meadows, and breathtaking mountain views, Yosemite National Park is truly one of the most incredible places to capture memories with your loved ones! As a local Yosemite family photographer, I've had the opportunity to photograph so many wonderful families in this beautiful park. And if there's one thing I've learned, it's that a little preparation goes a long way toward making your session relaxed, enjoyable, and full of genuine moments. Whether you're visiting Yosemite for the very first time or it's a place your family returns to year after year, I'm sharing my favorite tips to help you prepare for your Yosemite family photography session!
1. Choose the Right Time of Day
Lighting makes such a difference when it comes to photography, especially in Yosemite! While the park is beautiful at any time of day, I typically recommend scheduling your family session during the early morning or evening hours when the lighting is softer and more flattering. One thing to remember is that Yosemite Valley is surrounded by enormous granite cliffs, meaning the sun can disappear behind the mountains much earlier than the actual sunset. This is why choosing the right time and location is so important! Early morning sessions are also a wonderful option for families wanting to avoid some of the crowds, especially during the busier summer months.
2. Pick a Location That Works for Your Family
Yosemite has no shortage of breathtaking locations, but not every spot is ideal for every family. Some of my favorite locations for Yosemite family photography include:
Cook's Meadow: Beautiful open scenery, mountain views, and plenty of opportunities for natural family portraits.
El Capitan Meadow: An incredible location featuring the iconic El Capitan granite cliffs.
Cathedral Beach: A beautiful setting along the Merced River with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Yosemite Falls: Perfect for families who want to incorporate one of Yosemite's most famous landmarks into their photos.
When choosing a location, I always consider the ages of your children, the time of year, lighting, and how much walking your family is comfortable with. My goal is to find a location that's not only beautiful but also allows your family to relax and enjoy the experience!
3. Coordinate Your Outfits Without Matching Too Much
One of the biggest questions I receive before family sessions is, "What should we wear?" My biggest recommendation is to coordinate rather than match! Yosemite already provides such a stunning natural backdrop, so soft, neutral, and earthy colors photograph beautifully against the mountains and greenery. Think creams, warm browns, muted greens, soft blues, and other natural tones. I generally recommend avoiding large logos, bold graphics, and overly busy patterns that can distract from the beautiful scenery and your family's connection. And don't forget comfortable shoes! Depending on your location, we may do a little walking to reach some of the prettiest spots. It is never a bad idea to bring a pair of walking shoes and also a nicer pair for photos.
4. Give Yourself Plenty of Travel Time
This is probably one of my biggest tips for families visiting Yosemite! Yosemite National Park is incredibly popular, especially during the spring, summer, and fall months. Between entrance lines, traffic, and finding parking, getting to your session location can sometimes take longer than expected. I always recommend arriving in the park earlier than you think you'll need to. This gives your family time to use the restroom, grab a snack, get dressed if needed, and arrive at your session feeling relaxed rather than rushed. The last thing I want is for your family to feel stressed before we've even started taking photos!
5. Prepare Your Little Ones (But Don't Stress!)
As a photographer who works with lots of families and young children and a mom to two littles myself , I know firsthand that kids don't always want to sit still, smile, or look at the camera. And guess what? That's completely okay! Some of my favorite photographs come from the unexpected moments. The giggles, the cuddles, the little hands holding onto mom and dad, and the genuine interactions that happen naturally. Before your session, I recommend making sure your children are well rested, have eaten, and know that we're going to have some fun together. Bring along a few mess free snacks, water, and anything that might help your little ones feel comfortable. Most importantly, don't worry about making every moment perfect. I promise, the candid moments are often the ones you'll treasure the most!
6. Dress for Yosemite's Changing Weather
One thing families don't always realize is just how quickly the weather can change in Yosemite National Park. Even during warmer months, mornings and evenings can be chilly, especially in shaded areas of Yosemite Valley. I always recommend bringing an extra layer for everyone, particularly if you have young children. It's also important to remember that Yosemite looks different throughout the seasons! Spring brings beautiful greenery and flowing waterfalls, summer offers warm days and lush scenery, fall features golden tones and crisp mountain air, and winter can transform the valley into a snowy wonderland. Each season brings something special to your family photos.
7. Relax, Have Fun, and Enjoy the Moment
If I could give families just one piece of advice, it would be this: don't put too much pressure on your session! You don't need perfectly behaved children, perfectly coordinated outfits, or everyone looking at the camera in every single photograph. What matters most is capturing your family exactly as you are in this season of life. I'll guide you throughout your session, help with natural posing, and encourage those genuine interactions that make your gallery feel like you. Yosemite is such a magical place to make memories, and I want your photography experience to be just as special as the images we create together.
