top 3 dreamy places to propose in Yosemite
Yosemite has no shortage of jaw-dropping views, but not every location is ideal for a proposal. Some can be incredibly crowded, others are more difficult to reach depending on the time of day or season, and some simply don’t offer the most flattering light for photos. After photographing proposals throughout Yosemite, I’ve narrowed it down to three of my absolute favorite locations, each offering something beautiful and unique. Below, I’ll walk you through what makes each location special, along with things to consider such as lighting, timing, accessibility, and crowds, to hopefully make choosing the perfect spot a little easier. After all, this is going to be one of the most important moments of your life, you deserve a location that feels just as special!
Tunnel View
Tunnel View is the classic Yosemite postcard view. This iconic lookout gives you a breathtaking view of the entire valley, with El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall all visible in one incredible scene. It’s also incredibly easy to access, located right off Wawona Road with no hiking required.
The catch? It’s one of the most popular stops in the entire park and rightfully so! If you're envisioning a more private, intimate proposal, timing is everything here.
I HIGHLY recommend planning your Tunnel View proposal for sunrise. Yes, it will be an early one, but it is very much worth that 4am alarm clock. The early morning light over the valley is absolutely unbeatable, and you'll typically encounter far fewer crowds than you would later in the day. Not only will you get that soft, dreamy morning light, but you’ll also have a much better chance of finding a quiet spot before the day's crowds begin to arrive.
There’s something incredibly romantic about watching Yosemite Valley slowly light up while getting down on one knee. If you want the iconic Yosemite views with a dreamy, intimate feel, sunrise at Tunnel View is hard to beat.
The absolute best time to propose here is at sunrise.
TIP: Plan to arrive at least 20-30 minutes before actual sunrise to find your spot and settle in.
Glacier point
Glacier Point is the spot that has my heart. To start, I have been coming to this specific iconic lookout point since I was a little girl. For a proposal, this spot is even more epic. It quite literally feels like you are standing above the valley floor with a straight on view of Half Dome. The additional epic factor is that you also can see Vernal and Nevada falls in the distance.
Due to the popularity Glacier Point brings, I have hand picked a beautiful location there that is a short walk, just slightly off the path and is not a common place visitors will go to, making it a very intimate, romantic spot to get down on one knee.
This is one of the rare locations that works beautifully at either sunrise or sunset. Sunrise gives you that quiet, just us here feeling with soft warm light on the granite; sunset turns the whole valley pink and orange as the sun drops behind the peaks and gives you that true "golden hour" that is so highly desired.
Best times to propose here: sunrise and sunset.
TIPS:
Plan to arrive 15-20 minutes early as the parking lot is a bit of a walk from where the actual lookout point is.
Glacier Point Road is only open seasonally (typically late spring through fall, depending on snowpack), so if you're planning a winter or early spring proposal here, it's worth double-checking that the road is open before you build a plan around it. Cook’s meadow loop
If Tunnel View and Glacier Point are the big, sweeping views, Cook’s Meadow is the intimate one. It’s a flat, easy loop trail right in the heart of Yosemite Valley, surrounded by meadow grass with views of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and Sentinel Rock depending on where you stand. Because it’s flat and easily accessible, it’s a wonderful option if you want a beautiful Yosemite backdrop without a hike involved.
Timing is especially important at Cook’s Meadow. Morning light can be tricky, as this stretch of the valley can remain shaded until around 10:00 a.m. depending on the time of year. Once the sun reaches the meadow, though, the light can quickly become harsher. My favorite time for a proposal here is later in the afternoon and into the evening. As the sun gets lower, the light becomes softer and more even, and toward evening, the meadow can take on that warm, hazy glow that gives photos such a dreamy, romantic feel.
Cook’s Meadow is also a beautiful alternative if you want to stay right in Yosemite Valley. The meadow is large enough that there are plenty of spots where a proposal can still feel private and intimate. My absolute favorite is right in the middle of the meadow with Yosemite Falls in the background. There’s something incredibly romantic about being surrounded by the meadow with the falls towering behind you—it’s easily one of my favorite proposal settings in the Valley.
Best times to propose here: later afternoon-evening.
TIP: Plan to get here 10-15 minutes early. This parking lot is SMALL and can get booked up fast.
